Pitsilia
The delimited geographic area

The geographically delimited area in which the aged meats recognized as Products with a Protected Geographical Indication are made, consists of 37 communities located in the Mountains of Pitsilia region.

Pitsilia is a cluster of mountain villages which form a unique geographical area. It is part of the Troodos Geopark, with a special geomorphology and soils that come from the ophiolitic rocks of the Troodos massif and have been formed in diabase and gabbro rocks, with the highest peaks being Madari (1612m.) and Papoutsa (1554m.). The picturesque villages of Pitsilia built on mountain slopes, among vineyards and orchards, still retain their traditional charm and natural beauty.

To produce the three PGI aged meats of Pitsilia region, in accordance with the specification in the Register of Protected Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications, wine is used from vineyards of the indigenous Mavro variety in which there may also be plants of the Maratheftiko variety.
